LISTEN: TenHaken's first week of Harvard mayor's school

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Yes, he has to do homework.

Mayor Paul TenHaken spent a good chunk of this week in New York City with 40 other mayors from around the world--from Topeka, Kansas to Sao Paulo, Brazil--going to school and getting acquainted.

For example, he said he talked to a mayor from Sierra Leone in Africa, where 75 percent of the population lives on less than one dollar a day. TenHaken said it put some of Sioux Falls' challenges in perspective.

He also said that Sioux Falls is known--for good things--across the country and around the world. He said mayors knew about the good economy in the city.

He'll spend the next year attending online seminars with his peers--and doing homework. He says the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative will help him come up with innovative ways to solve problems. TenHaken says to expect some pilot programs. Some may work, some may not. Either way, it will be educational for him and the city.

Oh, and he did say he didn't bring his egg money to the big city of New York. The project is completely paid for by the Leadership Initiative.
