SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- A new citizens' group has formed in Sioux Falls to support the $190 million school bond issue up for a vote September 18.

'Vote Yes For Schools' is chaired by Vernon Brown, who chaired the special task force that spent months working on the bond issue.

A group spokesman, Theron McChesney, believes that the stakes are high.

"Education touches everyone and having a strong educational system and making sure that we have a place to put our students in the future is something that's vital to the continued growth of Sioux Falls."

The bond issue would be used to build a new high school, middle school and elementary school.

McChesney says the need is obvious because the current school buildings simply don't have the capacity for the projected future growth.

He says Sioux Falls can afford this.

"It's only going to be a net change of 13 cents, in terms of total tax amount. For the average home in Sioux Falls of about 185,000, that's two dollars a month."

The new group has a website:

The Sioux Falls School Board voted unanimously Monday night to put the bond issue on the ballot.
