SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Sioux Falls Police have unveiled a new software program that maps most crimes in the city and is accessible to the public.
Because of Marsy's Law, the map cannot pinpoint addresses. It will put a pin in the middle of the street of the block where the crime was reported.
Users can set up alerts based on crimes or area, from 500 feet to two miles in diameter.
Sex crimes are not included because of privacy concerns.
Officer Sam Clemens explains the new technology in the video above.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota: The City of Sioux Falls has adopted a new interactive web-based map to show crime locations in Sioux Falls. CrimeMapping is an easy-to-navigate website that gives residents access to map out and analyze crime in their neighborhoods. Residents can search and set up personalized email alerts on crimes that occur within a radius around specific addresses.
“The public should feel safe in their neighborhood and knowing what is taking place around them is key,” said Police Chief Matt Burns. “This interactive software makes information easy to access and understand. When people know what is happening around their home, they can better work with police to help eliminate crime.”
CrimeMapping helps to improve community awareness and safety. Better informed residents can look out for each other and take precautionary measures to keep themselves and their neighbors safe. CrimeMapping gives residents the information they need to be more engaged, aware, and assist local authorities in building safer communities.
CrimeMapping is able to select from a number of different crimes, different date ranges, and can even create crime reports. A link to CrimeMapping is available at siouxfalls.org/crimemapping.
