SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- The Minnehaha County Commission on Tuesday was briefed on a proposed property tax opt-out to help the county with budget challenges.
If they vote for it, property tax bills would rise for homeowners. The deadline to decide is July 15, so the Commission is expected to decide at the next scheduled meeting July 10.
Rising crime in the growing Sioux Falls area means rising public safety costs. Another big price tag is the county jail expansion. The opt-out would give commissioners more wriggle room to deal with budget pressures.
