Sioux Falls deluge: for ducks, not dogs

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com)  A total of up to seven inches of rain deluged the Sioux Falls area over Wednesday and Thursday, a near record two day total.

National Weather Service Forecaster Brad Temeyer says that the heaviest rain was on the south side of the city.

The heavy rain caused flash flooding on numerous local roads and temporarily closed Interstate 90 in southwestern Minnesota near the Beaver Creek exit.

Temeyer warns drivers to avoid standing water. He says the current from just 12 inches across a road can move a car or pickup. "Don't drown, turn around" is a good strategy.

While the deluge caused some road flooding, it did little road damage, at least in Lincoln County. Emergency Manager Harold Timmerman says it didn't come down as hard or as fast this time.

"We didn't have the force behind this rain like with did in 2014 when we had a larger amount of rate that came in a shorter period of time."

It wasn't a good time to take your dog to the Spencer Dog Park in Sioux Falls, unless he likes to swim.  The swollen Big Sioux River flowed over its banks at several city parks.
