SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- New Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken has been real busy in his first weeks in office.

His administration has developed an updated safety plan for Falls Park, and is creating a new police unit to better handle street level drug crimes.

The safety plan will be presented to City Council next week. TenHaken doesn't want to be specific until then.

"...We hope addresses the danger in that area and also will not, you know, hamper the viewing or the experience of Falls Park."

A little Iowa girl drowned at the park in March.

The Police Department will be holding a news conference Wednesday to talk about the new Narcotics Crimes Unit or NCU. Two officers will be moved from regular patrol duty to this new unit.

Mayor TenHaken gives KELO.com News an example of how it would work when a homeowner sees suspicious behavior at a house across the street.

"Right now, either some of our patrol officers would be taken off patrol to kinda monitor that or our community resource officers. We'd have to find someone to surveil that. In this case, that would be a perfect case for the NCU guys."

TenHaken says one of the biggest surprises he had after taking office was just how many documents the mayor must sign by pen each and every day - he guesses at least 50 documents a day. The new mayor says he's hoping to get some sort of electronic signing system in place so he won't always be tethered to his desk.
