SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Speaker of the House Mark Mickelson had a change of heart between 2016 and 2018 over the so-called Marsy's Law victims' rights constitutional amendment.
In 2016, he did not support it. Now, he does.
"I didn't understand it at the time," the Sioux Falls state representative said. "There were a lot of different parts to it. Like a lot of other people, I guess I was pretty busy to understand it."
Now, however, Mickelson, who is also a lawyer, says he understands it and supports it, with the changes the Amendment Y would create should it pass in Tuesday's primary election.
"The improvements that we made were really just to clarify that this wasn't a litigation trap for law enforcement or for the state on behalf of plaintiffs' lawyers," Mickelson said. "Law enforcement can explicitly share information with the public so they can solve crimes."
