Starr expresses interest in City Council Chairmanship

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- City Councilor Pat Starr is considering a run for Council Chair.

He tells KELO.com News that current Council Vice Chair Christine Erickson moving to the top chair "is not a done deal." Starr thinks he has three votes--he needs four for a tie, five to win. He says if there are three tied votes, then the selection goes to a coin flip.

Starr and Councilor Marshall Selberg had both expressed interest in the Vice Chair position.

Then that race heated up.

Yesterday, City Councilor Theresa Stehly sent an email to fellow Councilors Selberg and  Starr--and others- about what they would do and how they would do it as City Council Vice Chair. She requested information on nine questions.

Selberg responded via email.

"As you are aware, we had an extended one on one discussion on these and other topics just the other day," Selberg said. "And you may recall that you repeatedly made it clear during that discussion that you would be support Councilor Starr for a leadership position."

Selberg said he was "puzzled" by the email.

Starr said he didn't mind Stehyly's questions.

"Part of leadership is putting yourself out there openly and honestly," Starr said.

Starr says regardless of the outcome, he is friends with Selberg and will remain friends with his fellow Councilor.

The Council votes on its new leadership at its 7 p.m. Tuesday meeting. The new Councilors and Mayor also take their seats then.
