SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- The City of Sioux Falls has announced another large-scale road reconstruction project.

This one begins Monday on Madison Avenue and Louise Avenue.

See the City's news release below for the construction and road detour details.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota: Starting Monday, April 2, 2018, work will begin on the reconstruction of Madison Street and Louise Avenue. Madison Street will be fully closed to traffic during Phase 1 of the project. Traffic will be detoured along Lyons Boulevard, 12th Street, and Kiwanis Avenue. The intersection of Madison Street and Louise Avenue will remain open.

Madison Street will be reconstructed from Louise Avenue to the Big Sioux River and expanded from three lanes to five lanes west of the river. Louise Avenue will be reconstructed and expanded from two lanes to three lanes from Madison Street to the north 1,500 feet. Utility work will include water main, storm drainage, streetlighting, and traffic signals. A pedestrian bridge also will be built over the river on the south side of Madison Street and connected to the bike trail.

“This project takes into consideration the heavy equipment and large loads that often travel down this street, so the concrete at some segments of this project will be poured 16 inches thick to ensure this investment lasts long into the future,” says Joshua Peterson, Principal Engineer—Project and Construction.

About 12,000 vehicles travel on Madison Street each day. The Traffic Engineering team will be monitoring intersections and roadways throughout Sioux Falls over the course of the summer to ensure traffic signals and other streets are functioning at optimal levels to carry additional traffic effectively.

Madison Street will reopen to traffic in late July. The entire $4.3 million project is scheduled to be complete this fall. D&G Concrete Construction Inc. of Sioux Falls is the prime contractor.

Drivers are urged to use caution and reduce their speed while traveling near the construction area and will want to consider alternate routes.
