Drowned girl's mother shares her nightmare on Facebook

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- The grieving mother of the little girl who drowned in the churning waters at Falls Park in Sioux Falls is pouring out her soul on Facebook.

Courtney Jayne writes that in less than 60 seconds five-year-old Maggie Jo Zaiger fell in. The mother says she was helping the girls little sister navigate the rocks with 5 other people nearby.

"I've been that parent judging others, wondering how can these things happen. Guess what? They happen. In 2 seconds. Faster than any human can react."

Jayne says she told the authorities that Maggie Jo must have thought that the thick foam by the falls was snow and wanted to touch it.

"I love you, Maggie Jo Zaiger and I'm so very sorry that I failed at protecting you in your short little life. I will never forgive myself." the mother writes on her Facebook page.

The family is from Audubon, Iowa. Jayne says she had never been to South Dakota before, let alone Sioux Falls, or Falls Park.

She calls Maggie Joe "an amazing daughter."
