Deer season is over for Sioux Falls Police

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Specially trained Sioux Falls police officers have bagged their limit of 50 deer for 2018.

Animal Control Officer Julie DeJong says the available tags were all filled between January 1 and February 18.

"There are still quite a few deer in the areas we removed them from, so we will likely be continuing this program next year."

The hunts focused in the southeast, west and northeast parts of Sioux Falls.

DeJong says a total of 25 deer were removed from the west and southeast, and 25 deer were removed from the northeast.

The decision to harvest deer inside city limits is evaluated year-to-year by the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks, based on annual deer counts, vehicle collisions, and other factors listed in the plan.

The main goal of the hunts is to keep down deer-vehicle crashes.

The City donates the venison to Sportsmen Against Hunger, which, in turn, gives the meat to needy families.
