SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- The real Sioux Falls Police report that some fake cops used a phone scam to take thousands of dollars from an elderly woman this week.

Spokesman Sam Clemens says the phone scammers, masquerading as law enforcement, told the 86-year-old victim that her grandson was in jail, and needed the money.

She eventually realized she was being had,  but not before sending the scammers $10,000.

Clemens says that the real police will never, ever, do something like this over the phone, so if you get such a call, hang up and let the real police know. Of course, that's why these scammers prey on older people, who are often confused and scared by the fake story they're being told.
