Raising money for Planned Parenthood in Sioux Falls

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) -- A Portland Oregon-based clothing company has started an online fundraising campaign for South Dakota's only abortion clinic.

Wildfang styles itself "the feminist brand notorious for donating to causes near and dear."

Spokeswoman Alex Welsh admits that the company could lose business in very conservative South Dakota by raising money for the Planned Parenthood office in Sioux Falls.

"We do, we do, but it's just something that we are not willing to give up. We are not willing to let women be at risk."

Welsh says if they can raise $5,000 that will help defray the costs of doctors traveling to the clinic from out-of-state and if they get all the way to $750,000, that would fund the entire clinic for a year.

The campaign is called "We're Not Going Back", referring to the Roe v. Wade court decision that made abortion on demand legal.

The campaign also includes billboards in some major cities. Wildfang is also putting one up on South Minnesota in Sioux Falls.

Spencer Cody with South Dakota Right to Life says last year a group based in Oregon helped push assisted suicide in South Dakota, so it's ironic.

"Now it's a clothing store in Portland, Oregon, as well, that's trying to fund abortions in South Dakota."  Cody says what the campaign could raise is "chump change" compared to the director of Planned Parenthood in the Dakotas just donating five percent of her salary.
