Women's March planned for Saturday, January 20

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Saturday, January 20, women from across Southeastern South Dakota will hold an anniversary Women's March, standing in solidarity with each other, and with those marching across the country.

This year's March is a celebration of accomplishments achieved over the last year, and as a call to action over concerns ranging from ending sex trafficking, racial profiling, discrimination based on color, disability, sexual orientation, religion, and immigration status; access to health care, including birth control and maternity care, along with affordable insurance coverage, expanding family leave, climate change, equal pay, voting rights and equal representation of people of color and of women in state and local government.

Speakers this year include Sioux Falls Mayoral candidate and founder of Jolene's Task Force, Jolene Loetscher and Dr. Laura Renée Chandler, Assistant Professor of History at SDSU.

The organizer of Sioux Falls' GirlTrek, Taylor Newcomb, says her group "is marching to continue the legacy of black women walking for change, as well as to celebrate all that we have accomplished politically over the last year."  GirlTrek is the largest health non-profit and health movement dedicated to African-American women and girls.

There will be a pre-March gathering at EmBe, 300 W. 11th St., from 8 to 10 AM, where all South Dakota's elected congressional and legislative members and 2018 candidates have been invited to attend.

The March will begin at 10 AM at Carnegie Town Hall and end at the County Courthouse.

There's also an after-March event at the Icon Lounge hosted by LEAD.

The hosts for this year's march include Common Grounds Indivisible, 605 Indivisible, Planned Parenthood of ND, MN, & SD, GirlTrek, and the Sioux Falls Center For Equality.
