SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) - A Brandon woman and her teenage son were arrested in connection with shots fired at homes in two northwest Iowa counties.

A large collection of guns and ammunition were found in a reinforced basement room in her home.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says the large number of guns that were found is a concern.

“I strongly agree in second amendment rights for law-abiding citizens, the problem here is the law-abiding component was gone,” Jackley said. “It brought up alarm bells, and law enforcement did an excellent job of sharing information of getting at the bottom of this before something further tragic happened.”

Jackley says law enforcement averted a very significant public safety concern, but also says it’s an opportunity to learn.

“We need to study this. How do we make sure we’re doing a good job,” he said. “We need to protect law-abiding citizen’s rights, but if it’s not a law-abiding citizen, what are we doing to protect the public.”

He says it all came down to sharing information between state, federal and local authorities.

“They did what they needed to do and got to the bottom of this before further tragedy happened,” Jackley said. “I want to put a pat on the back of law enforcement for doing what they do best, and that is protecting the public.”

50 year old Artis Kattenburg and a juvenile male that lived with her are both in jail, facing multiple charge.
