SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) The Sioux Falls Police Department is still testing body cams that were purchased last year.
Police Spokesman Sam Clemens says that officers on motocycles, on foot and on bikes have been using the cameras. He says there is talk about getting cameras for the entire force, but it's only a possiblity at this time.
Clemens says they still need to test body cams along with in-car camera systems. They are looking at several different vendors.
The Huron Police Department recently announced that it was providing body cams to all its officers. An increasing number of South Dakota law enforcement agencies have been adopting body cams.
Experts say body cams help de-escalate confrontations because suspects know they are being recorded. The recordings can also provide evidence of police misconduct or, alternatively, clear a police officer of wrongdoing.
