SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- KELO-AM went on the air 80 years ago this year.
Rock and roll DJ Jon Michaels has been at the station for over half that time. Before that, he grew up listening to the station.
He's seen format changes and technology changes. He's heard the obituaries for live, local radio. But video didn't kill this radio star--or this station.
"They thought it was going to go out with the movies," Michaels said. "They thought it was going to go out with this technology or that technology. But we're still here."
Darn right.
Radio, Michaels says, made--and still makes a personal connection with the audience that other technolgies cannot.
"Radio was radio back at that time," Michaels says. "And we had a lot of fun. And it was your personal friend. There wasn't the internet and all the stuff that they have now."
Michaels was that friend, as a rock and roll DJ, as a news director, as public affairs director, or the owner of "Disco on Wheels." And we here at KELO-AM are still your friend.
This is the last in our series on the 80 year history of KELO-AM, largely told through our living--and still working!--broadcasting legend, Jon Michaels.
