Sioux Falls, S.D. (KELO.com) -- South Dakota is a landlocked state in the middle of the country and has never been known as a seafood hotbed but that could be changing.
Dakota Seafood Company may change that.
The official grand opening in Sioux Fall will be held Jan. 5-7–but the doors will open for business beginning Saturday. Owner Dave Nielsen opened the Rapid City location in 2015. He’s looking forward to opening his second store.
“We’re thrilled to have an opportunity to deliver the highest quality seafood to both customers and local restaurateurs in and around Sioux Falls,” he said. “I love South Dakota, I love seafood and we’ve been successful at bringing the two together.”
The business buys fresh seafood directly from a purveyor’s dock and is flown in daily to guarantee peak freshness. By building relationships with smaller fisheries, the company says customers are assured that all seafood is caught using sustainable methods, is in season, and is packaged with quality in mind.
“We know who caught it, where they caught it and how they caught it,” Nielsen said.
Customers and local restaurant owners can also call in special orders.
“If it’s in season and available – we will do our best to get it to our doorstep,” Nielsen said.
Travis Petersen has over a decade of experience in the grocery business and will be the general manager in the Sioux Falls location. Nathan O’ Neal is the assistant manager with a background including experience at a California grocery store focusing on upscale meats and seafood.
At least 14 varieties of finfish, several types of oysters and at least three species of salmon will be available each and every day. Their shelves will also be stocked with yellowtail and grouper, urchin, three kinds of shrimp, spot prawns, plus the basics including mussels, clam and tuna.
Seafood isn’t the only choice on the menu. Customers can also choose other meats including Wagyu beef, elk, caribou and a charcuterie. They also offer a selection of artisan cheeses, sauces and fresh produce.
The store is located at The Bridges at 57th Street and Western Avenue.
