Thune on how the tax code grew and grew

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Why is the federal tax code so complicated?

Sen. John Thune gave his take at the Americans for Prosperity luncheon Tuesday in Sioux Falls.

"There are so many areas, over the years where you accumulate all these different things tucked into bills," Thune said. "They they become law and develop a constituency. Then it's virtually impossible (to get rid of them)."

Tax reform, he says, is trying to combat the deductions and credits that have crept into the tax code.

Thune says he expects a family of four in South Dakota that makes about 73-thousand dollars a year to get a $2,200 tax cut under the Senate's tax reform bill.

One woman in the audience challenged Thune, saying that "millionaires like him" don't care about poor and middle class people.

Thune stood his ground.

"I think that we want to make sure that those who are working hard to raise their families have a little bit of help and keep more of what they earn," Thune said.

Thune says the Senate will spend next week debating and amending the bill, which will then likely head to a conference committee because of the differences with the House's version.

He then expects to have a tax reform bill on the President's desk by the end of the year.
