CODINGTON COUNTY, S.D. (KELO.com) -- A car colliding with an elk doesnt happen every day in eastern South Dakota.
Codington County Sheriff Brad Howell says it's happened.
"It's rare. Actually it was one of those double takes for the deputy that was on the scene."
The surprised motorist from rural Wilmot is fine. The elk is deceased.
This was a wild elk, a young buck with antlers, but Sheriff Howell says he talked to a man in Grant County who raises elk. Howell says the man told him that his domesticated elk will bugle, a call made by the creature, and that distinct bugle will sometimes draws wild elk that may be passing through northeastern South Dakota.
