SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- How is it possible for the head of the South Dakota Republican Party to stay registered for 17 years as a Democrat in Iowa?
Blame not filling out a form completely.
According to Kevin Hill with the Iowa Secretary of State's Office, he presumes that when Dan Lederman, chair of the South Dakota GOP, moved from Iowa to South Dakota in 2000, he did not fill out the portion of the South Dakota form that asks the voter to list their previous address. See voter registration screen shots for Lederman's voter registrations at right.
"He didn't fill that part of the registration and it (the Iowa registration) would have been cancelled," Hill said.
Hill also says that to be taken off the voter rolls in Iowa, a voter has to not vote in two consecutive elections and notices to the voter about not voting would have needed to "bounce" back to the Iowa SOS. Hill said that didn't happen.
Lederman's residential address in Newton, Iowa is also the address of Lederman Bonding Co. Iowa SOS mail to that location was apparently recieved by someone at that location.
How to fix the mess?
"Call the Jasper County auditor or the South Dakota Secretary of State to get taken off the list," Hill said.
KELO.com News has additional questions on the matter out to the South Dakota and Iowa Secretaries of State and the Jasper County Iowa auditor.
