AUDIO: Secret Denny deal must be made public

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) Argus Leader News Media has won a big case against the City of Sioux Falls in the South Dakota State Supreme Court.

The Court has ruled that the city must make public the details of the deal it worked out over those bulging panels on exterior of the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

The contractors agreed to pay $1 million, but city officials have kept other details a secret.

The state's highest court has ruled that the deal does not meet exceptions to the requirements of South Dakota's open record laws. Attorney Jon Arneson successfully represented the Argus Leader.

"We just thought it was an absurd extension of what the law should be doing when the idea is to limit secrecy and to promote transparency." Arneson says that obviously he's very happy because the court could have very easily gone the other way.

The Argus Leader filed suit in 2015.

Construction of the Sanford Premier Center cost $185 million.
