SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.COM) -- Maybe it won't do any good, but Mayor Mike Huether and Police Chief Matt Burns say they have to try.

In a news conference today, the two leaders stressed that parents have to be parents--and not their teens' friends.

They stressed the city's 11 p.m. curfew, that nothing good happens after that time.

And they want parents to be "old school" and hold their kids accountable.

"We need to ask some basic questions every single time," Huether said. "Where are they going? Who are they going to be with? What are they doing? And what time are they going to be home?"

The two leaders said youth crime is on the rise in the city and stopping it starts with parents.

"There have been three juveniles who have been killed in our city since July of 2016," Burns said. "And those that were with them and ultimately held responsible for that were teenagers themselves."

Sioux Falls Police report that there were 473 violations of the city curfew for teenagers last year, the same number in 2015.

So far this year, there have been 254 curfew violations.

Do you know where your kids are after 11 p.m?

You can watch the first 15 minutes of the news conference above.
