SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Very constructive and wide ranging is how South Dakota's John Thune describes last night's small bipartisan dinner at the White House with President Trump.
Thune was one of three Senate Republicans, and he listened closely to the three Senate Democrats at the table.
"I was trying to get a since of, ok, what do you need in a tax bill," Thune told KELO.com News. "Most of the Democrats made it pretty clear it has to be focused on middle income families."
Thune says he got a sense that at least some the Democrats would be willing to work with Republicans on tax reforms, but the proof will be in the pudding when it comes time to vote.
Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp, who also attended Tuesday's dinner, was also positive.
"Very collegial, very business like," Heitkamp told KFGO Radio in Fargo. "In the past when I've been there it's been much more chatty. We got right down to talking about infrastructure, we got right down to talking about taxes, spent a lot of time talking about trade. And we also talked the atmosphere in Washington and whether this can get done in a bipartisan way."
