S.D. has higher percentage of veterans than national rate

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) -- South Dakota has a higher percentage of veterans than the national average.

According to a recent study by the state Department of Veterans Affairs, over eight percent of South Dakotans have served in the military, compared to just less than six percent nationally.

The largest percentage of South Dakota veterans served in the Gulf Wars, followed by the Vietnam War era,  the Korean Conflict, then peacetime, then World War Two,

The department estimates 18 percent of South Dakota veterans suffer from post traumatic stress disorder after their service.

Some of the statistics in the report:

  • Largest number of veterans--Minneaha County, 14,023.
  • Homeless veterans--106 to 120 out of 1,180 homeless people, increase of 14 percent from 2015.
  • Gulf War veterans--27,254.
  • War War II veterans--2,303.
