SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Southeast Technical Institute President Bob Griggs tells It's Your Busniess's Bill Zortman why the Sioux Falls school is helping raise funds and goods for hurricane disaster relief.
"It's really important as an educational institution in the community, we want our students out in the community," Griggs said. "Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have been terrible tragedies. But they are also a teaching moment."
One of STI's unique contributions is because of its commercial drivers license program--a semi tractor and trailer to haul donations to Texas.
Our partner Southeast Technical Institute is donating the use of a semi-tractor and trailer to haul donated items to the Houston Food Bank. Student Tracey Dannelley helped organize STI's response to the hurricane. "A lot went into this to set it up. It's really successful," Dannelley said. "We're getting huge donations. We worked really hard to set this up."
Doing anything worthwhile is never easy.
SECOND STORY
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Sometimes you just have to ask.
That's what Dave Scaturro and Autumn Kaskie of our MWC sales team did. They asked businesses around our building at 13th and Phillips to give to our hurricane relief fundraiser.
Andi, the owner of the Top Hat bar across the way did--to the generous tune of $500.
"Andi has such a big heart," Kaskie said."She was talking about how much she wants to help. She didn't feel this was good enough but it was good enough!"
"Absolutely!" Scaturro added. "Love it!"
Thank you Andi!
ORIGINAL STORY
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- Dogs, semis, volunteers, radio and TV personalities--and generous people--joined outside the Midwest Communications Radio stations in downtown Sioux Falls for 13 hours of fundraising for hurricane relief.
All six of MWC's stations are participating in the hurricane relief drive that will assist the Red Cross's Disaster Relief Fund and the Houston Food Bank.
KELO-FM, KRRO-FM, and KTWB-FM were all broadcasting live first thing Friday morning on the sidewalk at 13th and Phillips. They were joined by the morning news team from KSFY-TV, which also did live cut-ins. Students and staff from Southeast Technical Institute assisted MWC staff in taking donations.
Contributors can drive right up to the curb and drop off a cash, check or food items and not even have to get out of their car.
About 8:45 a.m., a black and white Sioux Falls Police cruiser pulled up and the officer gave a generous donation.
One volunteer brought their Springer spaniel to help. STI brought a shiny new "student driver" semi-tractor and trailer to haul the donated items to the Houston area.
There was no amount noted yet for the fundraiser as the cash and checks are sealed in a "fish tank" that will be opened and counted at the end of the drive at 7 p.m.
