Local Red Cross priming pump with more volunteers

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) -- The response to Hurricane Harvey in Texas is going full bore, while preparations are beginning in Florida for Hurricane Irma.

Meanwhile in the Sioux Empire, the American Red Cross Eastern South Dakota Chapter is not only planning to send more volunteers wherever they are needed, they've trained more volunteers who are or soon will be ready to go.

"We have a number of newly trained volunteers who came in through our training on Monday," said local Red Cross executive director Jennifer Ross.  "These newly trained volunteers are being matched with the needs both for Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma and will be deploying in the coming weeks and months."

Ross adds that with the destruction in Texas, the need for shelters and mobile feedings remains.

"Our volunteers on the ground are continuing to serve in shelters and as part of mobile feeding teams," Ross said.  "They are working long shifts in shelters helping to serve those who have faced this devastation.  In addition, our ERV drivers are delivering meals in areas where the water has resided, helping feed workers and residents who are getting back to their homes."
