SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – On Tuesday, Sept. 5, the South Dakota Department of Transportation will begin repairing the northbound lanes on Interstate 29 from 12th Street (Exit 79) to Madison Street (Exit 81) in Sioux Falls.
Traffic will be reduced to two lanes in a 1 ½ mile segment to complete the repairs. Two lanes for through traffic will be maintained with the use of lane shifts prior to the work zone.
For this project, the department is using an advanced queue detection system which will advise drivers of real-time traffic conditions as they approach the work zone. This system uses portable message boards and speed sensors to warn drivers of slowed or stopped traffic conditions within and leading up to the construction zone.
All ramp traffic will be maintained during the construction; however, there will be reduced merge areas at the ramps.
Motorists using Interstate 29 should be aware of the ongoing construction activities, lane shifts, equipment and personnel in the area, and use caution when proceeding through the work zone.
Traffic congestion is expected. Drivers are encouraged to take notice of the information provided by the queue detection system and consider alternate routes if traffic in the work zone has become slowed or stopped.
The prime contractor for the $3.1 million project is Diamond Surface, Inc. of Rogers, Minnesota.
