SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) Sioux Falls Police received over 300 complaints about illegal fireworks on July 4th, but that doesn't mean they were able to handle them all.
There are priorities.
"Not only are there 312 calls for fireworks yesterday, there's an additional 300 to 400 calls for service that are not related to fireworks that we are trying to handle, and many of those are priority calls," explained Captain Loren McManus at Tuesday's daily police briefing.
Despite all those calls, police issued only 17 citations. They could only get to so many fireworks complaints with so many other more important things going on in the city. McManus said you sit on your deck at night and hear all those fireworks going off. You can't possibly get to all of them.
McManus said that fireworks complaints for the entire long holiday weekend actually dipped from last year's holiday period - from 632 complaints down to 501 complaints this year.
