AUDIO: Better protecting history set for a vote

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) The Old Courthouse Museum and Pettigrew House in Sioux Falls are stuffed with thousands of priceless historical artifacts that should be stored more safely elsewhere.

"Right now, we have stuff in the attic, which was never intended to be occupied. We have stuff in the basement, where we have water at times," explains Siouxland Heritage Museums Executive Director Bill Hoskins.

A joint meeting Tuesday afternoon of the Sioux Falls City Council and Minnehaha County Commission is scheduled to vote on putting a 29-thousand-square foot warehouse expansion out to bids. If successful, construction could start in September at 54th Street north and N. Westport Avenue on the estimated $4 million project.

Hoskins says it's a great example of the community working together because a third of it would be paid for by the city, a third by the county, and a third by private donations.

Not only would priceless artifacts be stored more safety, but the expanded warehouse would take pressure off the Old Courthouse Museum and Pettigrew House.

"By removing a lot of weight and a lot of stress on the structure." says Hoskins.
