SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO-AM) -- Every South Dakotan is on the hook for about $13,000 per state employee for their pension benefits.
That’s according to a new study by the U.S. Census Bureau.
As high as that amount sounds, it ranks the state about in the middle of per capita pension obligations.
According to the study, the state provides just over $5,000 per employee annually for pension benefits.
Also, for every dollar a state employee contributes, the state contributes $3.22.
Alaska has the highest per capita pension obligation at just over $28,000. Tennessee has the lowest at just under $7,000.
