SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO-AM) - The Sioux Falls Police Department is asking you to check your credit card and bank statements after a gas station employee found a card skimmer at a pump.
Officer Sam Clemens said the employee noticed the seal was broken on a pump at the Love's truck stop near the intersection of North Cliff Avenue and Interstate 90. The employee opened the pump, removed the skimmer and called Police.
It's unclear how many cards may have been compromised by the device. Crooks install them to record the personal information on the card's magnetic strip, such as card number and expiration date, then use the info to make a copy of the cards for their own use.
Clemens says the incident serves as a reminder to check the sticker seal on pumps before using your card. If the seal is ripped, notify an employee of the station immediately. A broken seal is a sign that the pump's card reader may be skimmed.
Credit card skimmers have been rare finds in Sioux Falls. The only other device found was in an ATM outside a bank back in 2015.
