South Dakota producers criticize proposed Trump Ag cuts

UNDATED (KELO AM) The South Dakota Farm Bureau says that agriculture takes unfair hits in President Trump's proposed new federal budget.

The Trump blueprint calls for billions of dollars in ag cuts, most prominently in the crop insurance program.

"Cuts in that dimimishes our ability to build a safety net under our operations and that contributes to national security through the ability to raise our own food," warns Farm Bureau President Scott VanderWal.

VanderWal says that the farm industry has taken cuts in USDA budgets several times in disproportinate levels and it would be unfair to do it yet again.

He says the Farm Bureau is concerned about the federal debt and ways to bring it down, but producers just don't believe they should do more than their "fair share."

The Trump Administration's proposed budget is just the first step in the long process of often messy sausage making in Congress. It's really the U.S. House of Representatives where money bills begin.
