UNDATED (KELO AM) Dozens of homeowners on Cottonwood Lake in Spink County can no longer meander to the lake because of the non-meandered waters issue in South Dakota.
That's just one of the many consequences of the contentious situation says Republican State Representative Herman Otten of Lincoln County, a member of the special legislative group trying to come up with solutions.
"These individuals can't access that body of water either, so they can't even access the waters behind their cabins," Otten tells KELO Radio's Greg Belfrage Show.
Flooding through the years as created lakes or expanded lakes across private property in South Dakota. As a result of a State Supreme Court ruling, State Game, Fish and Parks has removed public access from about 25 lakes and ponds, most in the northeastern part of South Dakota.
But as Otten makes clear, its more than just anglers trying to get on their favorite fishing holes or private property owners demanding lower taxation for the loss of some of their land.
He says the study group hopes to put together proposed legislation in the coming weeks. There may be a special session of the state legislature in Pierre, as early as June.
