SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - A South Dakota Penitentiary inmate was sentenced to 30 years yesterday for aggravated assault on law enforcement for an attempted escape last February while receiving medical attention at a Sioux Falls hospital.
24-year-old Alonzo Douglas Young attacked one of his guards with a handmade knife in an effort to escape. The Officers were able to disarm and restrain Young before completing his plan. Neither officer that took him to the hospital was injured.
Young pled guilty to assaulting the officer and attempted escape. A ten year sentence on the attempted escape charge was suspended. He also admitted to being a habitual offender during the crimes.
Young faced a maximum of 60 years in prison and $60,000 in fines.
The new sentence is in addition to his previous 22-year-sentence for a robbery conviction in Minnehaha County.
