SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) The Sioux Falls School District welcomes the greater flexibility in school meals announced by the Trump Administration on Monday.

School systems nationwide have been straining to meet strict nutrition requirements to make food choices healthy, but also appealing to students.

Child Nutrition Supervisor for Sioux Falls Schools, Joni Davis, says the new flexibility might mean more regular pizza for kids, instead of just whole wheat varities.

"That's been one that's been a bit of a challenge as kids have had more reaction to, as venders have tried to work with whole grain crust," says Davis. Another food students may be seeing more of is regular pasta, instead of just whole grain.

Whole grains is one of three areas in which the U.S. Department of Agriculture is giving more local control. The others are sodium, or salt, content, and flavored milks.

Davis says more flexibility and local control will help save money in the long run.

"Certainly we are always looking for the best customer satisfaction, the healthiest product possible, but we know that we have a obligation to watch the cost of the products we are using also."
