A Sioux Falls link to Civil Rights history has died

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) Former State Senator Richard 'Dick' Gregerson of Sioux Falls has passed away at the age of 84.

Gregerson served in Pierre from 1979 to 1982. He also served 16 years on the State Transportation Commission.

Gregerson was a prominent attorney in Sioux Falls, involved in many civic and community affairs, but he also helped make history back in 1962. Gregerson was part of the FBI security detail that protected James Meredith, as he became the first black man to attend the University of Mississippi.

Governor Dennis Daugaard has ordered that flags at the State Capitol fly at half staff on Monday, May 1.

Miller Funeral Home, Sioux Falls, is handling the funeral arrangements.
