SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - South Dakota State Auditor Steve Barnett says he'll run for secretary of state next year as Shantel Krebs makes a bid for U.S. House.
Barnett says the secretary of state's office is fast-paced. Obviously they handle elections, business filings and pistol permits. He says the state is getting more business application and he thinks it's a "really interesting office."
Barnett credits Secretary of State Shantel Krebs in doing a good job in cleaning the functions of the office. He says the office is "up and running well." He says it's important to provide leadership and continuity and keep the forward momentum going.
Barnett says he has a lot of experience in being a public watchdog. He says he's the watchdog of the tax dollars now and he'd like to be the watchdog of fair and accurate elections. He doesn't want anything to be compromised and to keep South Dakota a business friendly state.
Barnett was first elected as Auditor in 2010 and re-elected in 2014
Krebs already announced her run for the Republican nomination for the U.S. House next year.
