PIERRE, S.D. (KELO AM) School bathrooms based on biology could be on the ballot next year in South Dakota.
The proposed initiated measure would require school kids to use the bathrooms and locker rooms of their biological sex. Special accommodations could be made for transgender children. The State Attorney General Explanation for the measure is attached to this story.
The State Legislature has approved biological bathroom bills in the past, but they have been vetoed by Governor Daugaard. The Committee to Ensure Student Privacy now wants South Dakota voters to decide the issue.
The sponsor must obtain at least 13,871 valid petition signature by November 6, 2017 to have the measure placed on the ballot for the November 2018 general election.
