Some answers in fatal Spearfish fire

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Fire investigators in Spearfish have narrowed the location of a fire that killed five children earlier this month but the cause is eluding them.

Spearfish Police Lieutenant Boyd Dean says the fatal fire started on home's porch where there was a large trash can used for ash and hot coals from a wood burning fireplace.

The area was also used by the home's residents for disposing of lit cigarettes.

Investigators say with the two possible ignition sources, it's difficult for them to say what the exact cause of the fire was.

They have ruled out electrical sources because there was no wiring or appliance on the porch.

The five children, between the ages of 6 and  11, died in an upstairs bedroom.  The fire broke out early in the morning of April 1.  There were several adults and a 13 year old that escaped the burning home.

When Northern Hills' firefighters arrived at the scene, the home was engulfed in flames.
