MITCHELL, S.D. (KELO AM) It was easy does it for Mitchell Police Thursday, dealing with a potentially live hand grenade.
"Initially it caused a little commotion. Streets were shut down in front of the police department until it was determined that the grenade was safe to handle." Lt. Don Iverson tells KORN Radio in Mitchell.
Iverson says that a man carried the grenade into the police department for disposal, explaining that it was found in a building near Mitchell that he and a friend were cleaning out.
A Davison County Sheriff’s Office Deputy searched the property. No other explosives were found. Everson says it’s believed the device may be a training grenade.
Everson is reminding the public to never touch, let alone carry, anything that's believed to be explosive - instead, get away as fast as possible and call 911.
