Lein stepping down in Harrisburg

Harrisburg, S.D. (KELO AM) - Kevin Lein, the Harrisburg High School Principal who was shot by a distraught student in the fall of 2015, has announced he will be stepping down at the end of the term to take a job in Iowa.

Lein's resignation was accepted by the Harrisburg school board on Tuesday. Lein told KSFY TV that the interview process moved quickly, and with the competitive nature of the job he had to make a decision right away. Lein will oversee a handful of districts located near Aimes and Fort Dodge, which is near where he grew up.

Officials in Harrisburg have reportedly offered the job of Principal to Vice Principal Ryan Rollinger.

Lein made national headlines after he was allegedly shot in the arm by student Mason Buhel, who is awaiting trail in the incident. Lein was treated at a Sioux Falls hospital for his injuries and was back at work the next morning.

Buhel's trial was scheduled to start in early 2016, however it was delayed as his defense team was gathering evidence. A new date has not been set, Buehl is currently being held in Sioux Falls.
