SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - April 19, 1993, survives in the consciousness of South Dakotans who recall where they were and what they were doing when they heard Governor George Mickelson and seven others perished in a plane crash near Dubuque, Iowa.
Mickelson's press secretary was Janelle Toman of Pierre who says there are those unique moments in history where people immediately remember the distinct circumstances in their own lives. She still hears to this day from South Dakotans who relate to her their distinct memories of that shattering news.
Mickelson and the five government and business leaders, and two state pilots, flew to Ohio in an effort to convince John Morrell to continue operating it's Sioux Falls meatpacking plant. It was on their way back that the state plane they were in developed problems and crashed.
Also on board were Roland Dolly, commissioner of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, Ron Reed, commissioner of the Governor’s office of Energy Policy, Sioux Falls Economic Development leaders Angus Anson, David Birkeland and Roger Hainje. State Pilots Ron Becker and David Hansen also died in the accident.
Toman says what she remembers most about the tragedy was how "gracious and helpful the state was, all across the state, people pitched in to help and be supportive of the families who were impacted by this tragedy."
She says it was a very difficult time, but made easier because so many people, not just state employees, but average citizens stepping up and being supportive.
The Fighting Stallions Memorial near the State Capitol was dedicated a year later in remembrance of the eight men who lost their lives.
