SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Vermont's mandatory genetically modified organism labeling law goes into effect July First and Republicans in the U.S. Senate Ag Committee vow take action before then.

Senator John Thune supports a voluntary-only GMO labeling bill but says Democrats recently blocked the Biotech Labeling Solutions Act.

Thune says the agreements that were reached allowed for a mandatory labeling program that would be phased-in over time, it wouldn't happen overnight.  He says in terms of next steps the ball is in the Democrat's court.

Thune says committee Republicans have made many concessions, adding that they went more than halfway to meet the concerns of committe Democrats and they still refused.  Thune says it seems like they can't take yes for an answer.

Opponents to the measure called it the Deny Americans the Right to Know, or DARK, Act.
