House still eyes Obamacare repeal

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - House Speaker Paul Ryan was forced last month to withdraw a bill intended to undo much of Obamacare, but Republicans continue negotiating a compromise.

Congresswoman Kristi Noem says the biggest issue is making sure the House version abides with Senate rules.

Noem says it's the needle they're trying to thread, making sure the House can get the legislation to the Senate, have them work on it and get it to conference committee "so we can put it on the President's desk."

Opponents say 24 million people would lose their health insurance under the GOP plan.  Noem says the figure is closer to 14 million and is misleading.

She says the 14 million that won't have health insurance over the next couple of years, "it's not because they lost their policies, those will stay in place so that we have a transition.  It's because they're choosing to exercise their right to purchase or not to purchase."

Many conservative lawmakers says the original GOP proposal fell far short of full repeal.

President Trump still aims to overhaul health care and the tax system.  He said yesterday he wants to put repeal of Obamacare ahead of revamping the tax system.

Congress is currently on its Easter recess.
