Commission denies church's abatement request

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - In a unanimous vote, the Minnehaha County Commission today denied a church's request for abatement of an over $17,000 property tax bill.

Jesus Only Apostolic Church received the property on Burnside Street  from a an investment company that bought it from the Moose Lodge.

TTT Investments owned the property when the state took a snapshot to determine tax status on November 1st.  The church didn't assume ownership of the property until December of 2016.  The property was transferred on a quick claim.

Church leaders also assumed that the Moose Lodge was a nonprofit and since the property was being transferred from one nonprofit to another, they didn't have to apply for exempt status.

County Attorney Kersten Kappmeyer says there was a purchase agreement in the first transfer followed by a quick claim deed.  Kappmeyer says the probably was not a lot of layout of terms of that transfer, including a tax bill, it was really just a deed that was made out and recorded.
