WASHINGTON, D.C. (KELO AM) South Dakota's Kristi Noem (R) wants to make sure that farmers and ranchers are not forgotten in the tax reforms Congress considers in the months ahead.
The state's lone U.S. Representative testified before the House Agriculture Committee on Wednesday that Agriculture is sometimes unfairly treated in the tax code.
"This includes the death tax. As many of you know, myr family was hit with the death tax when my dad had an accident on our farm at the age of 49 years old," said Noem, who has sponsored legislation to repeal the death tax.
She also wants tax reforms to reflect how highly leveraged agriculture is.
"Ensuring there are adequate cost-recovery mechanisms in the tax code is essential to attracting and keeping younger producers on the farm."
