SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Improvements to one of the most popular stretches of the Sioux Falls bike trail begins Friday and users will be detoured around the work.
Mike Patten, with Parks and Rec, says the project will create a wider, smoother trail between South Cliff Avenue and South Minnesota Avenue.
Patten says the detour will route users down through the Tomar Park spur, over to Minnesota Avenue and back into Yankton Trail Park.
Patten says the project will be done in phases and will be completed by next fall.
He says the work will also soften some of the curves in that stretch of bike path and says with widening there should be less chances of conflict between cyclists and pedestrians.
He says the work will also improve sightlines through one of the more wooded sections of trail and improve drainage.
The most popular section of the trail is the Spencer Park Section. Total counts at Spencer Park exceed 216,000 users, with 130,00 of them being cyclists.
Patten says he appreciates users' patience during the project and asks that you use caution while recreating near the construction area.
