SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The State Senate tabled a Resolution yesterday that began it's journey expressing a lack of confidence in the refugee resettlement program.
Senator Neal Tapio of Watertown was a sponsor of the original resolution which was eventually amended to praise President Trump for "his commitment to the safety of the American people."
On the Senate floor yesterday the Republican lawmaker said the country remains at war.
Tapio said "some say we are at war with terror. How do you have a war with terror? We are at war with radical Islamic terrorism. It is okay to say that in polite society. We are at war with radical Islamic terrorists. More accurately Islamic radical extremists are at war with us."
Tapio says the Senate Resolution, the legislature and the state have a chance to stand with President Trump.
Tapio said the resolution also allows the state to stand with the Statue of Liberty and the American flag, symbols of unity for all those people who wish to be free.
He told lawmakers that their vote "is a vote to stand beside the most courageous President in a generation."
The resolution was tabled 20 to 15. According to Senate rules the Resolution can not be reconsidered this session.
