SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) - The coordinator of the local Homeless Advisory Board says the Sioux Falls area hasn't developed enough affordable housing.
Stacey Tieszen told KELO Radio's Jon Michaels that the problem is compounded by what is described as affordable project development, but with rent prices outside the range of those in low income guidelines. "Affordable housing" is defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as paying 30% or less of gross monthly income for housing costs.
Tieszen cites the fact that the current "affordable" housing is being utilized to high levels, but there's a need for more, as is evidenced by occupancy at homeless shelters.
She says she's seen numbers indicating that for each group of 100 looking for affordable housing, there's only 39 units available.
The conversation has been a hot topic, as developers have faced push back from neighbors of such proposed projects. The concerns have ranged from increased traffic and crime to reduced values for surrounding single family homes.
A new group has been formed to assist in the housing situation locally. It's called "Sioux Falls Thrive"....and you can check out their website and read the latest studies on the issue here: https://siouxfallsthrive.org/
